Japanese: マナー･ハウス（英語表記）manor house

A manor refers to the residence of a lord of a manor in medieval England. Compared to castles, it was less of a defensive structure, and because England had better public order than continental countries, many remains from the 13th to 15th centuries can be found. It had a simple structure with a great hall with an open ceiling at the center, to which was connected a kitchen and a few family rooms, and in the early days the grounds were surrounded by moats and had pylons. The great hall had a hearth in the floor and beautiful trusswork in the decorative attic. Each room had large windows and fittings covered in oilcloth or oil paper, making it much more comfortable to live in than a castle.

中世イギリスの荘園(マナー)領主の邸宅をいう。城郭に比して，防備的性格の希薄なものをさし，イギリスは大陸諸国に比べて治安が良好だったため，13世紀から15世紀にかけての遺構が多数見られる。吹抜きの大広間(ホール)を中心に置き，それに台所と少数の家族室を接続した簡単な構成で，初期には敷地を堀で囲んだり，塔門を設けたりした。大広間は，床に炉が切られ，化粧屋根裏の美しい小屋組みを特色としていた。各室とも窓が大きく，油布･油紙を張った建具を入れ，城郭よりもはるかに住み心地がよかった。
