Japanese: 豊後高田[市] - ぶんごたかだ

A city in the west of the Kunisaki Peninsula in Oita Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Castles have been built in the city center since the Middle Ages, but it never developed into a castle town. Since the Meiji period, it has been the administrative, commercial, and bus transportation center of the west of the peninsula. National Route 213 runs through the city. The main industry is agriculture, with rice, onions, tobacco, mandarin oranges, and tea grown, and clams and seaweed farmed on the coast. In the industrial sector, IC-related companies have also set up shop here. Some of the city's landmarks include Fukiji Temple, Denjoji Temple (Maki Daido), which has a wooden Buddha statue from the Fujiwara period, and Kumano rock-carved Buddhas (historic site). In March 2005, Matama Town and Kakachi Town in Nishi-Kunisaki County were incorporated into the city. Area: 206.24 ^km2 . Population: 23,906 (2010).

大分県国東(くにさき)半島西部の市。1954年市制。中心市街は中世以来築城が繰り返されたが城下町として発展するには至らなかった。明治以後は半島西部の行政，商業，バス交通の中心。国道213号線が通じる。農業が主で，米作のほかネギ，タバコ，ミカン，茶の栽培，海岸ではハマグリ，ノリの養殖が行われる。工業ではIC関連企業の進出もみられる。富貴(ふき)寺，藤原期の木彫仏像をもつ伝乗寺（真木大堂），熊野磨崖仏（史跡）などがある。2005年３月西国東郡真玉町，香々地町を編入。206.24km²。２万3906人（2010）。
