An archipelago in the English Channel south of the UK. British territory. In France it is called the Îles Normandes (Normandy Islands). It is located west of the Cotentin (Normandy) Peninsula in France, at the entrance to the Bay of Saint-Malo, and is made up of the four main islands of Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Sark, with a total area of 195 km2 and a population of about 150,000 (1995). As part of the Palaeozoic Armorican Mountains, it has a wide area of flat land and a warm maritime climate, so its main industries are the forced cultivation of tomatoes, potatoes, flowers and fruit trees, and dairy farming, known for the Jersey and Guernsey dairy cows, which are shipped to the UK mainland market.

イギリス南方，イギリス海峡中にある諸島。イギリス領。フランスではノルマンディー諸島Îles Normandesと呼ぶ。フランスのコタンタン(ノルマンディー)半島の西，サン･マロ湾の入口に位置し，ジャージー，ガーンジー，オルダニー，サークの主要4島から構成され，総面積195km2，人口約15万(1995)。古生代のアルモリカン山系に属して平たん地が広く，また温暖な海洋性気候のため，トマト，ジャガイモ，花卉，果樹の促成栽培とジャージー種，ガーンジー種の乳牛で知られる酪農が主産業となっており，イギリス本土市場へ出荷される。
