A town in Kuma District, southeastern Kumamoto Prefecture. It stretches from the eastern Hitoyoshi Basin to the border with Miyazaki Prefecture. The central settlement, through which the Kuma River Railway passes, has long been the center of the upper reaches of the Kuma River. There are factories producing lumber, shochu, and other products. The town produces rice, tobacco leaves, rush grass, and melons, and also engages in dairy farming. Area: 165.86 km2 . Population: 10,554 (2010).
