A town in Kuma District, southeastern Kumamoto Prefecture. It stretches from the eastern Hitoyoshi Basin to the border with Miyazaki Prefecture. The central settlement, through which the Kuma River Railway passes, has long been the center of the upper reaches of the Kuma River. There are factories producing lumber, shochu, and other products. The town produces rice, tobacco leaves, rush grass, and melons, and also engages in dairy farming. Area: 165.86 km2 . Population: 10,554 (2010). 熊本県南東部，球磨(くま)郡の町。人吉盆地東部から宮崎県境に及ぶ。くま川鉄道が通じる中心集落は古くから球磨川上流域の中心地。木材，焼酎(しょうちゅう)などの工場がある。米，葉タバコ，イグサ，メロンを産し，酪農も行う。165.86km2。１万554人（2010）。
