A general term for marine fishes belonging to the family Zoarcidae in the order Perciformes. Thirty-eight species are known from the waters off Japan. All of them are cold-water fish, and in Japan, most are found along the coast of the Sea of Japan and along the coasts of Tohoku and Hokkaido. However, some species, such as Davidijordania abei (total length approx. 17 cm), which was discovered in the deep waters of Kumano Nada, are found in the deep waters of central Honshu. The body is long and slender, laterally compressed. Along the long and slender body are long dorsal and anal fins, which connect to a small caudal fin, and all fins lack spines.
