Tonaki Island

One of the Okinawa Islands, this island is located 58 km northwest of the main island of Okinawa. It has an area of ​​3.46 square kilometers. It belongs to Tonaki Village, Shimajiri District, Okinawa Prefecture, and consists of one village and one district (aza). Its highest point is 179 meters, and it is a high island with mountainous terrain mainly made of dolomite. In the past, bonito fishing was popular, but today it is half farming and half fishing, and depopulation is progressing. It was designated a prefectural natural park in 1997 (Heisei 9). Furthermore, the rural communities on the island were designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 2000. There is a daily regular ferry from Naha Tomari Port. Population 434 (2009).

沖縄諸島の一つで、沖縄本島の北西方58キロメートルの海上に位置する島。面積3.46平方キロメートル。沖縄県島尻(しまじり)郡渡名喜村に属し、1村1字(あざ)からなる。最高点は179メートルで、ドロマイト(苦灰石)類を主とする山地をもつ高島。以前はカツオ漁が盛んであったが今日半農半漁であり、過疎化が進んでいる。1997年(平成9)県立自然公園に指定された。さらに島内の農村集落は、2000年重要伝統的建造物群保存地区に選定された。那覇泊(とまり)港より毎日定期船がある。人口434(2009)。
