C 5 H 9 NO 3 (mw 131.13). H 2 NCH 2 COCH 2 CH 2 COOH. Usually refers to 5-aminolevulinic acid. It is a precursor of porphobilinogen, which is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of tetrapyrrole compounds such as heme, chlorophyll, and bile pigments, and two molecules of δ-aminolevulinic acid undergo dehydration condensation to produce porphobilinogen.
