1909‐64 Ukrainian-born American Marxist economist. He studied at the universities of Frankfurt, Breslau, Berlin, and Harvard, and later served as associate professor and professor at Stanford University (1948-64). In his major work, The Political Economy of Growth (1957), he presented his own original theory of development, which argued that if we could abolish unproductive waste of potential economic surplus and properly allocate it through socially rational planning, we could break the vicious cycle of poverty.
