<br /> The remains of a Stone Age settlement in Nishikawaguchi, Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture. Located on a terrace overlooking the confluence of the Shinano River and the Uono River, it was discovered in 1957 (Showa 32). The first survey was conducted the following year, and four surveys were conducted afterwards. As a result, the area of the ruins was about 100m east to west and about 50m north to south, and 23 pit dwelling-like remains and earth pits were confirmed, along with about 100,000 stone tools. These included a large number of microblades, wedge -shaped microblade cores made using the Yubetsu technique, boat-bottom-shaped microblade cores made using the Horo -ka technique, chisel-shaped stone tools (carving tools), scrapers (thin stone tools), and other stone tools typical of the microblade culture period at the end of the Late Paleolithic period. The combination of chisel-shaped stone tools and wedge-shaped microblade cores, named the Araya type, is an important indicator in the study of the Paleolithic culture of Northeast Asia, and has spread from the area around Lake Baikal to China, Korea, and Alaska. It is considered important because it clearly shows the northern microblade culture and the spread of human populations at the end of the Paleolithic period, and was designated a national historic site in 2004 (Heisei 16). It is about a 10-minute drive from Echigo-Kawaguchi Station on the JR Joetsu Line, etc.

新潟県長岡市西川口にある石器時代の集落跡。信濃川と魚野川の合流点を望む段丘上に位置し、1957年（昭和32）に発見され、翌年に第1次調査が行われ、その後、4次にわたって調査が実施された結果、遺跡の範囲は東西約100m、南北約50mで、竪穴(たてあな)住居のような遺構と土坑23基が確認されるとともに、約10万点の石器が出土した。これらには細石刃(さいせきじん)、湧別(ゆうべつ)技法による楔(くさび)形細石刃核、幌加(ほろか)技法による舟底形細石刃核、彫刻刀形石器（彫器）、スクレイパー（薄片石器）類などが多数含まれ、後期旧石器時代終末の細石刃文化期の典型的な石器群の様相を示していた。荒屋型と名づけられた彫刻刀形石器と楔形細石刃核の組み合わせは、北東アジアの旧石器文化研究上で重要な指標となっており、バイカル湖周辺地域から、中国、朝鮮、アラスカに広がっている。北方系細石刃文化と旧石器時代末期における人類集団の拡散を如実に示していることなどから重要とされ、2004年（平成16）に国の史跡に指定された。JR上越線ほか越後川口駅から車で約10分。
