Ani

Japanese:
Ani

A former town (Ani-machi) in Kitaakita County, northern Akita Prefecture. The area now occupies the southern part of Kitaakita City. Located at the western foot of Mt. Moriyoshi, it occupies the Ani River basin, a tributary of the Yoneshiro River. The former Ani-machi was formed in 1955 (Showa 30) when Aniai-machi and Oani-mura merged. In 2005 (Heisei 17), it merged with the towns of Takanosu, Aikawa, and Moriyoshi to become Kitaakita City. The Akita Inland Longitudinal Railway and National Route 105 run through the area. Formerly known as Ani Copper Mine Village, it developed as one of Japan's leading mining towns since ancient times. After the Meiji period, it was under the management of Furukawa Mining (now Furukawa Co., Ltd.), but in 1970 it left the company and copper mining continued at the Ani Mine, but stopped completely in 1978. The population was 11,339 in 1960, but dropped to 4,443 in 2000. The Nekko area is a straddle village, and Nekko Bangaku, a type of lion kagura dance, is a national important intangible folk cultural property. The former Ani Mine foreigners' residence, which remains in the mining town, was built in the early Meiji period and is a national important cultural property.
