Tokachi River

Japanese:
Tokachi River
This river originates on the southeastern slope of Mt. Tokachi in southeastern Hokkaido, flows through the Tokachi Plain near Kutari, Shintoku Town, Tokachi General Subprefectural Bureau, and empties into the Pacific Ocean. It is 156 km long and is the third longest river in Hokkaido. It flows almost south until Mikage, Shimizu Town, then heads east and turns southeast at Toshibetsu, Ikeda Town. Its main tributaries are the Tobetsu River, Otofuke River, and Satsunai River. Since the river is extremely turbulent in the middle and lower reaches and causes floods, flood control work began in 1923, including excavation of a new waterway, embankment construction, and revetments. As a result, the river channel between Chiyoda, Ikeda Town and Moiwa, Toyokoro Town, became the Tokachi River with the new waterway in 1937. The river downstream of Moiwa was once called the Otsu River, but it is the main stream of the Tokachi River. In the upper reaches, there are the Iwamatsu and Kamiiwamatsu power stations (total of 32,600 kW), and the Tomura power station (40,000 kW). The Tokachi Plain in the middle and lower reaches is a field crop and dairy farming region. There is a salmon and trout hatchery in Makubetsu Town. Until the completion of the Kushiro-Obihiro railway in 1905, the river was used for water transportation.
