…What is particularly noteworthy about the UK is the beautifully offset-printed Puffin Picture Book series, which was inspired by Soviet picture books and is a groundbreaking inexpensive picture book series, with its sophisticated editing, printing and illustrations. In the 1960s, Charles Keeping and Brian L. Wildsmith showed eye-opening, brilliant and original techniques, while the hotheaded and rowdy Raymond Briggs, John Burningham and Hellen Oxenbury, each with their own comical style, appeared and brought a new wind to the genre.

In Germany, the illustrated books by Ludwig Richter (1803-84) for the Bechstein and Grimm illustrations, which had a folk-friendly appeal from an early stage, as well as the comic picture book "Max and Moritz" (1865) by poet W. Busch and "Brush Peter" (1848) by Heinrich Hoffmann (1809-94), which was full of extremely practical lessons, had a worldwide influence.
