…an Iranian horse-riding nomadic people who lived in the steppes of southern Russia. They were called the Sauromatai by Herodotus, and are said to be of the same lineage as the Sarmatians and Alān peoples who later became known as the Sarmatians and Alān peoples. They initially lived to the east of the Scythians across the Don River, in the lower Volga River basin, and in the southern Ural steppes. They were strongly influenced by Scythian culture, and played a major role in spreading Scythian culture to the east. …
