Hirara [city] - Hirara
An old city in Okinawa Prefecture that includes the northwestern part of Miyako Island and the two islands of Ikema and Ogami. It was incorporated as a city in 1947. The city developed around Harimizu Port and is the center of the Miyako Islands. Sugarcane cultivation and sugar manufacturing are thriving, and pumpkins and kidney beans are also cultivated. Miyako Jofu is a specialty product. Ikema is the center of Okinawa's fishing industry along with Itoman. It mainly engages in bonito fishing, as well as shrimp farming and bonito flakes processing. It is connected to Naha and Ishigaki by regular ferries and air routes, and to Ikema Island by the Ikema Ohashi Bridge. In October 2005, it merged with Miyako County's Gusukube Town, Shimoji Town, Irabu Town, and Ueno Village to become Miyakojima City. 64.60 km2 . Population 34,889 (2003).
