One theory is that the name "hankesho" (half-makeup) comes from this leaf color, while another theory is that the name comes from the fact that these leaves grow around the 11th day after the summer solstice. It is also called Katashirogusa (one-sided white grass). The rhizome is long and creeping, and the aboveground stem is upright, 0.5 to 1 m tall. The whole plant is soft.
