…A perennial herb of the Houttuynia family that grows in colonies near waters and in marshes in warm regions (illustration). The lower halves of the top few leaves of the stem are white and stand out. One theory is that the name "hankesho" (half-makeup) comes from this leaf color, while another theory is that the name comes from the fact that these leaves grow around the 11th day after the summer solstice. It is also called Katashirogusa (one-sided white grass). The rhizome is long and creeping, and the aboveground stem is upright, 0.5 to 1 m tall. The whole plant is soft. The leaves are alternate, long oval, unserrated, 5 to 15 cm long, and 4 to 8 cm wide. …
