In 1937, it was designated a Place of Scenic Beauty as the Southwest Coast of Izu, and in 1955, it was incorporated into the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. It is made of white sandy tuff from the Neogene system, and features a variety of coastal topography, including islands such as Hebijima and Hiesanjojima, oddly shaped rocks, tombolos where islands join the mainland at low tide, sea caves developed in cracks in sea cliffs, and Tenso Cave, where the top of a sea cave opens up due to a fault.
