Polymers that form fibers are usually insulators, but fibers that are made conductive are called conductive fibers. There is a growing demand for clothing materials with excellent antistatic properties to prevent fires caused by static electricity in petrochemical plants, and to prevent dust adhesion and discharge in the pharmaceutical and precision electronics industries. Conductive fibers that have been developed to date include (1) synthetic fibers with uniformly dispersed conductive metals or graphite, (2) metal fibers made from fibers of metals such as stainless steel, (3) organic fibers with a metal coating on the surface, and (4) organic fibers with a resin coating on the surface that contains a conductive material.

繊維を形成する高分子化合物はふつう絶縁体であるが，とくに導電性をもたせた繊維を導電性繊維という。石油化学工場における静電気による火災の防止，あるいは医薬品工業，精密電子工業におけるほこりの付着や放電の防止のために，優れた制電性を有する被服材料が要求されるようになってきた。現在開発されている導電性繊維には，(1)合成繊維の中に導電性のよい金属や黒鉛を均一に分散させたもの，(2)ステンレス鋼のような金属を繊維化した金属繊維，(3)有機物繊維の表面を金属で被覆したもの，(4)有機物繊維の表面を導電性物質を含む樹脂で被覆したもの，などがある。
