...In the Russian Orthodox Church, Wednesdays and Fridays were fasting days, and long fasting periods were set before major festivals such as Easter and Christmas, during which eating meat was prohibited. Meat and eggs were foods for festivals, but on festivals and celebrations, pirog, a pie-like dish, bliny, and kut'ya, a dish made by mixing grains with honey and raisins, were also served on the table.
