A perennial herb of the Allium genus in the Liliaceae family. It grows wild in the mountains and fields of Japan, and has long been cultivated for its edible properties. The parent species is widely distributed in Eurasia, and has long been eaten in the Mediterranean region. It has underground bulbs similar to those of scallions, with a reddish purple surface. A thin, tubular stem 20-30 cm long grows, and at its base two or three similarly long, cylindrical leaves grow, partially embracing the stem. In late spring, numerous small, light-pinkish purple flowers with six petals grow in scattered clusters, forming a hemispherical shape like the inflorescence of a leek. The young stems and leaves, along with the bulbs, are eaten as a stew or other dish.
