It is one of the Islamic ibadat (service to God, rituals), and is the fourth of the five pillars of obligation for believers. In Arabic, it is called ṣawm. Immediately after the Hijra to Medina, Muhammad established Ashura as a day of fasting, following the Jewish system, but after the Battle of Badr, he established the month of Ramadan (September, Ramaẓān in Persian, Ramazan in Turkish) as the month of fasting.
