A general term for peasant uprisings that occurred in Echizen and Wakasa provinces during the Edo period. In 1768, about 20,000 people gathered under Fukui Castle to demand a wide range of taxes, and other uprisings occurred in the Maruoka domain in 1779, the Katsuyama domain in 1786, and the Obama domain in 1833. In many cases, uprisings were accompanied by attacks, but they were planned and organized, and the rebels were almost always victorious, with no one punished. The participants in the uprisings were said to have been called minomushi because they smeared ink or soot on their faces and wore ripped hats and straw raincoats, but in historical documents they are referred to as "peasant minomushi," "minomushi rioting," and "minomushi gang." We can see the fear on the part of the feudal lords and the pride on the part of the peasants. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
