Born: February 4, 1871 in Heidelberg
Died February 28, 1925. German politician from Berlin. He started out as a saddler, but then moved into the labor movement and political activities. He became the Social Democratic Party's Secretary General in 1905, a member of the Reichstag in 1912, and its leader in 1913. He was a right-winger within the party. In October 1918, he was a member of the cabinet of Duke Max of Baden, and after the outbreak of the German Revolution in November of the same year, he was handed over the position of Prime Minister and served 24 hours a day as the last Chancellor of the Imperial Empire. After the revolution, he was chairman of the Committee of People's Representatives alongside H. Haase of the Independent Social Democratic Party. He did not like proletarian dictatorship and believed that revolution should be based on democracy, so he organized elections for a constitutional national assembly in January 1919, and was elected the first president in February, but died in office.
