French mathematician. He entered the École Normale Supérieure in Paris in 1876, and under the influence of C. E. Picard and C. Hermite, who were leaders in French mathematics at the time, he decided to study mathematics early on, and was awarded a doctorate in science in 1881. In 1879 he became a lecturer at the University of Paris, after which he held positions at various universities, and in 1897 he became professor of mathematical analysis at the University of Paris, a position he held until his retirement, and had a major impact on the development of analysis in France, not only in terms of research but also in terms of education.

フランスの数学者。1876年パリのエコール･ノルマル･シュペリウールに入学し，当時，フランス数学の指導的地位にあったC.É.ピカール，C.エルミートなどの影響の下に早くから数学を志し，81年に理学博士を授けられた。1879年パリ大学講師，その後種々の大学の職を歴任し，97年パリ大学の数学解析担当教授となり，定年退官するまでその職にあって，研究はもちろん，教育の面においてもフランスの解析学の発展に大きな影響を及ぼした。
