He expanded his territory by advancing into Syria in the west and Kurdistan in the north, and in 44 he captured Edessa and launched a counterattack against the Crusaders. After his death, his territory was divided into eastern and western parts by his two sons, and the Zengid dynasty of Mosul (until 1222) was succeeded by Sayf al-Din Ghazi, and the Zengid dynasty of Aleppo was succeeded by Nur al-Din Mahmud. Nur al-Din captured Damascus in 54 and consolidated his resistance against the Crusaders, and in 69 he sent Salah al-Din to Egypt to destroy the Fatimid dynasty. …
