Shinonoi Line - Shinonoi Line

The name of the East Japan Railway Company's track that runs from central to northern Nagano Prefecture. The 66.7 km section between Shiojiri and Shinonoi is double tracked, with only the Shiojiri-Matsumoto and Tazawa-Akashina sections being double tracked (double track ratio 29.8% as of 2011), and the entire line is DC electrified. It connects the Matsumoto Basin and the Nagano Basin, and trains on the Chuo Main Line run into the line from Shinjuku and Nagoya, connecting Matsumoto and Nagano. It is a trunk railway line in central Japan with a continuous gradient of 25‰ (per mille). It opened between 1900 and 1902 (Meiji 33-35), and was electrified between 1964 and 1973 (Showa 39-48). In 1987, following the privatization of the Japanese National Railways, it became part of the East Japan Railway Company.
