Japanese Soto Zen monk biographies. 12 volumes in total. The author was Reinan Shujo, the 20th abbot of Seisho-ji Temple in Aoyama, Edo. After collecting materials for over 30 years, he completed writing the biographies of 743 monks, including Dogen, in 1727 (Kyoho 12), and published them 15 years later in 1742 (Kanpo 2). Reinan made an effort to review and revise errors and omissions in previous monk biographies, such as the Nittojo Shosoden (1693), and added "verification" at the end of each volume. Included in the Dai Nippon Bukkyo Zenshu and the Soto Zen Zenshu. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
