A type of genre painting from the early modern period, it depicts the work of various craftsmen. Many of them are made on folding screens or albums, with 12 to 24 pictures of craftsmen. They are descended from the medieval picture scrolls of artisan poetry contests, but reflect the rise of the middle class in the early modern period and are characterized by their vivid depiction of artisans in their environments. The famous example is the "Artisans' Folding Screen" (owned by Kita-in Temple) by Kano Yoshinobu (1552-1640). An older example is the "Tohoku-in Artisans' Poetry Contest" (late Kamakura period), which is a picture scroll depicting a poetic immortal painting style with poems added, and from the Edo period, the famous "Ekotoba of Artisans in the Early Modern Period" by Kuwagata Keisai, which vividly depicts artisans in a unique style. → Related Articles Craftsman Poetry Contest Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
