There are several theories about the origin of the word "pidgin," including that it is a Chinese dialect of the English word "business," that it is a Chinese dialect of the Portuguese word "ocupação" (profession), that it comes from the Hebrew word "pidjom" (trade), and that it comes from the indigenous language of the Guiana coast of South America, "pidian" (human). At present, the "buisiness" theory is the most common. Human history is also a history of contact between people with different cultures and languages through migration, war, trade, immigration, exploration, and so on.
