A general term for alpine and subalpine butterflies. In mid-latitude regions, some butterflies that live in high mountains can also be seen on the plains as the latitude increases, and there are few that strictly live only in high mountains. In Japan, representative alpine butterflies include the Pale-legged Eurasian, the Alpine Neanderthal, the Colias monadella, and the Alpine Skipper. Life in high mountains is harsh, and so they have behavioral and physiological adaptations to strong winds and cold. Many larvae take two to three years to reach adulthood.
