...Zarzuela was forgotten for a time due to the popularity of the tonadilla, a skit-like song theater with a strong folk and national character, and the influence of Italian opera, but in the mid-19th century it was revived by Francisco Asenjo Barbieri (1823-92) and several other talented composers. By the end of the century, many composers specialized in zarzuela, including Ruberto Chapí (1851-1909), had emerged, and the genre gained immense popularity, especially among the citizens of Madrid. However, from a purely musical perspective, zarzuela was heavily dependent on stage music from Italy and France, and could not be said to be a music based on highly nationalistic principles.
