A general term for amides in which one hydrogen atom of the amino group -NH2 of aniline is replaced with an acyl group. Representative examples include acetanilide (R = CH3 ) and benzanilide (R = C6H5 ). They are made by reacting aniline with an acid anhydride or acid chloride . They are generally crystalline compounds that are poorly soluble in water, and are used as crystalline derivatives to confirm carboxylic acids in the qualitative analysis of organic compounds. When heated in dilute hydrochloric acid or an alkaline aqueous solution, they are hydrolyzed to become aniline and carboxylic acid. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
