… In 1879, the first ship equipped with meat refrigeration equipment developed by Eugene Nicolle and perfected by his successors brought meat to London, and with the introduction of Brahman cattle suited to the climate, meat became the second most important export commodity after wool. William Farrer also began breeding wheat suitable for the continent, resistant to rust and drought, and in 1902 developed a new variety, which he named "Commonwealth Wheat" as a symbol of the national prestige of the newly independent nation. Starting with the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879, international exhibitions were held in cities around the country until the 1990s, supporting the rise of nationalism. …
