The bank was formed by companies centered around the Daiichi Bank, which was founded by Eiichi Shibusawa, and grew significantly around the time of World War I, with Shibusawa's family companies at its core. It had Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Oki Electric under its umbrella, and also provided loans to the Furukawa and Asano zaibatsu. However, it lagged behind in the wartime economic system that came about around the time of the Second Sino-Japanese War, and lost its identity as a zaibatsu when the Daiichi Bank merged with the Mitsui Bank (Imperial Bank) in 1943.
