Fox candle

Japanese: キツネノロウソク

A mushroom of the family Pectinifera, widely distributed in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. It grows on the ground in forests in autumn. It starts as a white lump the size of a quail's egg, then breaks at the top and grows a pale pink, wax-like fungus less than 10 cm long, forming a cone-shaped head at the end. The head has a dark green, smelly mucus on the surface, contains spores, and the boundary with the stalk is clearly visible. Closely related species include the foxglove fungus, which has an unclear boundary between the head and stalk, and the foxglove mushroom, which has a special cap on its head; both are non-toxic. It releases a snoring breath and spreads spores by insects.

北半球の温帯に広く分布するスッポンタケ科のキノコ。秋，林内地上に発生。初めはウズラの卵大の白色の塊だが，次いでその上端を破って，淡紅色で，蝋細工のような10cmたらずの菌体をのばし，先端は円錐形の頭部となる。頭部は表面に暗緑色で臭気のある粘液をつけ，内に胞子を含み，柄との界が明らか。近縁に，頭部と柄の界がはっきりしないキツネノエフデ，頭部に特別のかさのあるキツネノタイマツなどがあり，いずれも無毒。悪息を放ち，昆虫により胞子を散布。
