Machiko Hasegawa

Manga artist. Born in Saga Prefecture. Losing her father at an early age, she moved to Tokyo with her family (her mother and three sisters) and became the apprentice of Tagawa Suiho at the age of 16. After graduating from a girls' school, she made her debut with "Shojo Club", but was evacuated to her hometown during the Pacific War. While working at the Nishinippon Shimbun, she came up with the idea for a long-form manga, which became "Sazae-san" after the war. "Sazae-san" was first serialized in "Yukan Fukunichi" from 1946 (Showa 21), and later moved to "Asahi Shimbun", where it was serialized from December 1949 to February 1974. The book was published as a 67-volume series by her sister company, which became a long-selling hit, and was also made into a movie and a TV series. Other notable works include "Ijiwaru Baa-san". In 1985, she opened the Hasegawa Museum (now the Hasegawa Machiko Museum of Art) in Setagaya, Tokyo, where her original drawings and collection are on display. In 1992, she was awarded the People's Honor Award.

漫画家。佐賀県生まれ。早く父を失い、母と3人姉妹の一家をあげて上京、16歳で田河水泡(すいほう)に入門。女学校卒業後『少女倶楽部(くらぶ)』でデビューしたが、太平洋戦争で郷里に疎開、西日本新聞に勤めているとき構想した長編漫画が、戦後『サザエさん』となった。『サザエさん』は最初、1946年（昭和21）から『夕刊フクニチ』に、のち『朝日新聞』に移って1949年12月から1974年2月まで連載、単行本は姉の経営する姉妹社から67巻のシリーズとして刊行されてロングセラーとなり、映画化、テレビ化も行われるなど大ヒットした。そのほかの代表作に『いじわるばあさん』など。1985年、東京都世田谷(せたがや)区に自筆の原画と収集品を公開する長谷川美術館（現長谷川町子美術館）を開設した。1992年、国民栄誉賞。
