A general term for the peoples who lived in central and southern Italy in the 1st millennium BC and spoke the Osci language, which belongs to the Italic family. They are also called Osci. They include the Samnites, Bruttians, Lucanians, Apulians, Campanians, and Volsci, with the Aequi and Sabines being branches of the Osci. They were conquered by Rome by the middle of the 3rd century BC, and in 91 BC they waged a war of alliances against Roman rule, acquiring Roman citizenship, and Osci was replaced by Latin.
