Suzukake - Suzukake

Japanese:
Suzukake - Suzukake
Also written as shinokake. A nine-cloth top and eight-pleated hakama are worn over a white robe, unique to Shugendo. The top is likened to the nine associations of the Vajrayana realm and the hakama to the eight-leaf mandala of the Garbha realm, signifying the microcosm of the inseparable Golden Womb. This represents the Shugendo practitioner having the same qualities as Acala and Dainichi Nyorai. This robe is similar to the hitatare worn by laypeople, and fits the intention of Shugendo, which places secular life at its core. In Konohagoromo, an introductory book to Shugendo written by Gyōchi in the late Edo period, the meaning of shinokake is that a bamboo leaf is hung on the head during mountain training.
