...In 1807, the country was invaded by the French army because it did not submit to Napoleon's Continental System. In November of that year, Regent João handed over the governance of the country to the Englishman Beresford and fled to Brazil with his court. The opening of Brazil's ports (1808) and the Anglo-Portuguese Treaty of Amity (1810), signed under British pressure, dealt a devastating blow to the Portuguese economy. In 1820, a liberal revolution led by the commercial bourgeoisie broke out in Porto, Portugal, and João VI, who hurriedly returned to the country, approved their demands.
