An industrial city in the province of Hainaut in southwest Belgium. It is located on the north bank of the Sambre River, about 50 km south of Brussels. In the 18th century, the city was centered on coal mining, and in the 19th century, it developed into the center of a major industrial region with the canalization of the Sambre River and the construction of railways and roads. Although the surrounding coal mines were closed, the city has industries such as steel, machinery, glass, chemicals, and pottery, forming a large metropolitan area. It is one of the leading producers of glass in Europe. The Charleroi-Brussels Canal connects the Sambre River and the Scheldt River, and is directly connected by railway and road to cities in Belgium, Germany, and France.
