He was only five years old when his father abdicated in 1831, so he became head of the Regulatory Office only with the emperor's approval, and the country entered a regency period. José Bonifácio (1763-1838), a liberal nationalist and the real promoter of Brazilian independence, was in charge of the moral and intellectual education of the young emperor. Unlike his father, he was born and raised in Brazil, and was intelligent, gentle, and modest, so the people were eagerly awaiting his declaration of adulthood, as he was seen as a suitable person to rule the empire. …
