…The name was born when Bach, who was the court conductor of Cöthen, dedicated these six pieces to Christian Ludwig (1677-1734), Margrave of Brandenburg, in March 1721. Bach himself called them Six concertos avec plusieurs instruments in French. Each of the six pieces has a different instrumental arrangement, and they are broadly divided into two types of concerto sinfonia (Nos. 1, 3, and 6), which use the contrast effect of roughly equal instruments, and concerto grosso (Nos. 2, 4, and 5), which contrasts a group of soloists consisting of several instruments with an ensemble.
