A mountain (2,033m) on the southeastern tip of the Karkidiki Peninsula in northeastern Greece, the area is a holy site for the Eastern Orthodox Church. A monastery was built there in the 10th century, and it has been called the "Holy Mountain" as it was the largest center of monasticism. Currently, there are 20 coexistent monasteries, with about 1,500 monks living there, and self-governance is exercised by their representative. Since 1060, women have been prohibited from entering. It is also a treasure trove of ancient documents and artworks from Byzantine culture. It was registered as a World Heritage Site (combined natural and cultural heritage) in 1988. → Related article Quietism | Gregorius Palamas Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
