[Spleen diseases: splenomegaly and hypersplenism]
The spleen becomes enlarged and protrudes downward from the costal arch, becoming palpable. This enlargement is called splenomegaly. Infections such as malaria, portal vein congestion caused by cirrhosis of the liver, and blood diseases such as leukemia can cause large splenomegaly.
