Soviet playwright. Graduated from the Leningrad Theater School. After moving between studio theaters in Moscow and Leningrad from 1923, he made his debut as a playwright in 1930 with his first play, Klass. He subsequently published a series of plays, including Shestero lyubimykh (1935), Dal'nyaya doroga (35), and Tanya (39), of which Tanya is considered a representative work of Soviet drama before World War II. His Irkutskaya istoriya (59), set at a hydroelectric power plant construction site in Siberia and depicting the lives of modern young people, is a masterpiece that increased his reputation as a writer. Other works include Nas gde-to zhdut (63), Somewhere Waiting for Us, and Moi bedny Marat (65).

ソ連の劇作家。レニングラードの演劇学校を卒業。 1923年からモスクワとレニングラードのスタジオ劇団を転々としたのち,30年に最初の戯曲『クラス』 Klassを書いて,劇作家としてデビュー。その後,『愛すべき6人』 Shestero lyubimykh (1935) ,『遠い道』 Dal'nyaya doroga (35) ,『ターニャ』 Tanya (39) などの作品を相次いで発表したが,特に『ターニャ』は第2次世界大戦前のソ連戯曲の代表作とみなされている。また,シベリアの水力発電所建設現場を舞台に,現代の若い人々の生き方を描いた『イルクーツク物語』 Irkutskaya istoriya (59) は,彼の作家的名声を高めた傑作。そのほか『どこかでわれらを待っている』 Nas gde-to zhdut (63) ,『わたしの哀れなマラート』 Moi bedny Marat (65) など。
