Staudinger, F.

…German organic chemist and polymer chemist. Son of neo-Kantian philosopher Franz Staudinger (1849-1921). Born in Worms, he received his doctorate from the University of Halle in 1903, and served as professor of chemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (1912-26) and the University of Freiburg (1926-51), becoming director of the polymer research institute in 1951. He first made a name for himself with his research on ketenes, and then his research on isoprene led him to develop an interest in the structure of polymers. In 1920, he announced that polymers such as rubber and polystyrene were composed of large chain-like molecules, and two years later he named this the "macromolecule (Makromolekül)." …
