A town in Date County in the Abukuma Highlands in northeastern Fukushima Prefecture. The main settlement upstream of the Hirose River is on the route to Soma, Miharu, and other areas, and developed as a market town during the Edo period. Sericulture and weaving are thriving, and the town produces a lot of broad-width silk and rayon fabrics. A bus runs from Matsukawa Station on the Tohoku Main Line. Rice, taros, and tobacco leaves are also produced. The town suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 127.70 km2 . 15,569 people (2010). 福島県北東部,阿武隈(あぶくま)高地中の伊達(だて)郡の町。広瀬川上流にある主集落は相馬(そうま),三春(みはる)などへの交通路に当たり,江戸時代は市場町として発達。養蚕と機業が盛んで,絹,人絹の広幅物の産が多い。東北本線松川駅からバスが通じる。米,タラの芽,葉タバコも産する。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。127.70km2。1万5569人(2010)。
