[mythology]
According to Norse mythology, the gods created the first human being, Embla, the first woman, and Askr, the first man, from an elm and an ash tree. In England and other places, the custom of putting grape vines on elms began in the Middle Ages, and this combination was considered to be a good omen, so it also became a symbol of marriage and good relationships.

…They took it up and made two men out of it; Odin gave breath and life, Vili gave wisdom and movement, and Be gave face, speech, ears and eyes. The man was called Askr, the woman Embla, and from this came the human race. From the worms that wriggled in Ymir's flesh the gods made the dwarf dvergr. …
