…After 66 he taught at the Seminario Romano, an educational institution for the Society of Jesus, and from 67 he also served Cardinal Ippolito d'Este II, a powerful patron of the arts. In 1571 he was invited by Pope Pius V to return to his position as conductor of the Julia Chapel, and in 1586 he was named Papal Chapel Composer. He continued to work for the Pope for the rest of his life. The legend that Palestrina composed the Mass of Pope Marcellus to prove the religious significance of polyphony when church music was criticized at the Council of Trent (1545-63) has now been denied. However, he remains a representative composer of the Counter-Reformation. …
