Nirayama [town] - Nirayama
An old town in the northern part of the Izu Peninsula, Tagata County, Shizuoka Prefecture. The western part is a lowland of the Kano River, and is served by the Izu-Hakone Railway. It was the political centre of northern Izu in the Middle Ages and early modern times, and is home to the remains of Hojo Soun's Nirayama Castle, the residence of the magistrate Egawa, the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace (historic site) built by Egawa Tarozaemon, and the Yamaki ruins. Rice, strawberries, and vegetable cultivation are thriving here. Nirayama Onsen and Nakoya Onsen are hot springs. In April 2005, it merged with Izunagaoka Town and Ohito Town in Tagata County to become a city, Izunokuni City. 34.63 km2 . Population 19,655 (2003).
