...Since 1835, the border was constantly threatened by the Great Trek (Great Migration) of the Boers from South Africa, so the king sought British protection, and in 1843 the kingdom came under British protection. In 1868 the British protectorate of Basutoland was officially established. In 1871 Basutoland was annexed to the British Cape Colony, but the Sotho traditions were ignored, leading to protests from the local people.
